CMD treatment by a specialist in Munich

  • What is CMD (craniomandibular Dysfunction)?

A CMD disease is a disorder of the interaction between the masticatory muscle, temporomandibular joint and the teeth. These impairments are often triggered by stress, incorrect posture and/or malpositioning of the periodontium. Early treatment of the symptoms is particularly important in this disease in order to avoid chronic complaints.

  • CMD functional therapy - procedure and duration

Depending on the symptoms and complaints of the patient, an individual functional analysis, diagnosis and treatment planning is carried out in our practice. The duration of a CMD functional therapy depends on the causes and severity of the temporomandibular joint problems and can therefore vary from patient to patient.

We would be happy to advise you individually on the subject of functional therapy and splint therapy in our dental practice Seehofer in the centre of Munich - find out more about CMD treatment!

  • CMD diagnosis - functional analysis

A strained jaw, pressure in the head or clicking jaws? This could be a CMD disease that can be treated with an individually made bite splint. However, in order to treat temporomandibular joint pain effectively, a careful functional analysis is necessary first. If a CMD disease is suspected, different questions about the patient's medical history will be asked and a functional examination of the teeth and jaw will be carried out with the help of special instruments. In addition, the dentist carefully palpates the masticatory apparatus and the temporomandibular joints in order to identify possible malocclusions.

In some cases, an X-ray, DVT image, MRI, as well as a bite test and precise measurement of the jaw is useful in order to provide a holistic picture of the current jaw situation. For a precise diagnosis we work with a special ultrasound-based analysis system called Zebris, depending on the symptoms present. This scientifically recognized procedure allows us to reconstruct the exact oral and jaw situation of the patient. The method of digital functional analysis enables dentists and dental technicians to precisely examine all movement sequences of the jaw as well as malpositions in a 3D simulation. Once the final findings are available, the further therapy steps are planned in order to treat the temporomandibular joint problems in the long term.

  • CMD occlusal splint

For a successful and long-term treatment of CMD, for example, bite splints can be used to compensate for incorrect loading. The CMD splints are made in our in-house laboratory based on the patient's oral situation and can significantly relieve headaches, backaches and pain caused by a strained jaw.

  • Further treatment options

Grinding down individual teeth can also help to improve the interaction between teeth and jaw and relieve the chewing apparatus. If the jaw pain has psychological and emotional backgrounds such as stress, constant tension or nervousness, we recommend relaxation therapy. If the jaw strain is due to incorrect posture, physiotherapeutic therapy can be helpful to effectively release the jaw tension.

  • CMD symptoms

The masticatory apparatus is closely connected to the entire musculoskeletal system, so signs can in principle occur in various areas of the body and do not initially appear to be directly related to CMD disease. Those affected can suffer from back or headaches, for example, as well as from noticeably reduced performance, nausea and numbness in the fingers. In most cases, however, a CMD disease manifests itself in the area of the jaw, for example, through tension in the temporomandibular joints, a restriction of lower jaw movement, teeth grinding or jaw clicking
